US roaming from Europe is pricey and coverage varies a lot outside cities. Here is how to choose a US eSIM by network, data and trip length — including road trips.
The United States has three nationwide networks: T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. Travel eSIMs for the USA ride on one (sometimes two) of them, and which one matters more than in most countries because coverage differs sharply once you leave the metro areas.
Which US network should your eSIM use?
- T-Mobile — fastest 5G in cities, very good along interstates, weaker in remote rural areas and some national parks. The most common network behind travel eSIMs.
- AT&T — the broadest rural footprint, strong in the South and Midwest; 5G slightly less widespread than T-Mobile.
- Verizon — excellent rural coverage, but very few travel eSIMs use it.
For New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas or Chicago any network is fine — pick by price. For a road trip through national parks (Yellowstone, Utah, Arizona) prefer a plan that lists AT&T, or a dual-network plan.
How much data for the USA?
Americans use a lot of data and so will you: Google Maps on long drives, Uber/Lyft, mobile boarding passes, hotel check-ins, streaming in the evening. Budget 1–2 GB per day for a city trip and 2–3 GB per day for a road trip with navigation and music. Two weeks = 20 GB is a realistic mid-range choice; unlimited plans exist for heavy users.

Things that surprise European travellers
- Bands: older European phones may lack some US 5G bands (n41, n71). You will still get 4G/LTE, which is plenty. Phones sold from 2020 onwards are generally fine.
- Hotspot: most US travel eSIMs allow tethering; check the plan chip.
- Wi-Fi calling: keep your home SIM on Wi-Fi calling to receive calls without roaming charges.
- Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico: US plans normally include them; check the coverage list on the plan page.
Install before you fly
US immigration lines are long and airport Wi-Fi is hit and miss. Install the eSIM at home (it needs Wi-Fi only for the download), keep the line switched off, and enable it with data roaming when you land. The validity clock starts at that first connection.
