Best eSIM for Dubai (UAE): plans, prices and what actually works

Dubai and the wider UAE have some of the fastest mobile networks in the world — Etisalat (e&) and du both run dense 5G in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The problem is the price of using them: EU and UK operators charge €5–12 per day for roaming packages, and pay-as-you-go roaming can cost more than €10 per MB. How much data do you need in Dubai?

Most travellers use between 500 MB and 1.5 GB per day: maps to and from the Marina, ride-hailing (Careem, Uber), Instagram, restaurant lookups. • Validity starts on arrival: the day counter starts when the eSIM first connects in the UAE, so install it at home over Wi-Fi.

VoIP calls in the UAE

WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are blocked on UAE mobile networks (messages work fine). This applies to every SIM and eSIM, local or foreign. Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams are permitted, and the local apps BOTIM and ToTok work for calls. Plan accordingly if you need to call home.

Installing your Dubai eSIM

1. Buy the plan and open the email — the QR code and installation page arrive within seconds.
2. On iPhone tap Install eSIM; on Android scan the QR code in Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
3. Label the line "Dubai", keep it off until you land.
4. At the airport: enable the line, turn on Data Roaming for it, select it for mobile data. Your phone will register on Etisalat or du automatically.

Tip: Dubai airport (DXB) has free Wi-Fi if you need it for the download itself — but installing at home is far less stressful.

Physical SIM vs eSIM in Dubai

Tourist SIMs are sold at DXB arrivals (often with a free starter allowance) but require passport registration and a queue after a long flight. An eSIM bought before departure is active the moment you land and keeps your own number available for calls and banking SMS.
